Emma Creek GAOA

A crew member bends down to move a large rock.

Emma Creek, one of Montana's many treasures. A long, gravel logging road leads us to her front. Each step along the trail, which weaves among its namesake creek, brings our crew muddy boots, slippery log bridges, and eventual memories. The new growth meets our pick mattocks that pave a trail to define the new era of this cedar forest. She fights back to keep her bogs and burn scars. But she also gives back. Each unsuspected cedar branch to the face and blind step into a bog is resolved with every wild berry on our hike back to camp. She brings us together and tests our oath. Through our time, we gain an understanding of the subtleness of nature hidden in her strength and omnipotence. Digging tread and installing checks becomes an act of service beyond people whom hike. We serve the land, the Cabinets, and the Kootenai. We serve each other.
