Starting on April 14th, Crew 1 began their 6-hour journey from the MCC Greater Yellowstone Office to Medicine Rocks State Park in Ekalaka, Montana. With the goal of digging up 0.7 miles of new trail, the crew had two and a half days to complete the task at hand. It was an ambitious goal, but with eight crew leads, one senior crew lead, and one staff member, the project was completed just in time. Plans are in the works to promote the new trail to the local community in hopes of bringing more visitors to the park.
Medicine Rocks State Park is a beautiful, vast, and historic land located in Eastern Montana, once revered by the great Teddy Roosevelt, "As fantastically beautiful a place as I have ever seen." Though the park is open to the public, it is quite sparse in daily visitors, except for eager hunters who were there for the opening day of turkey season. Within the park, you'll find large sandstone rocks sporadically placed amongst the tall grass and rolling hills. These rocks tell the stories of millions of years of land change; what was once an estuary is now a windy and peaceful plain surrounded by cow farms. There is a quietness and a calmness to the park, though one must be aware of the outspoken geese, especially the protective mother goose building her nest in the homey rocks.
