Crew 1 Trails Training

Crew leaders face away from the camera, looking into the distance within a desert landscape.

From April 7th through April 10th, 2025, a total of twelve MCC crew leads, two senior crew leads, and three staff members worked on the maintenance and construction of over a half mile of trail at Weatherman's Draw. Crew Leads learned a variety of methods to build and maintain trails given the constraints of the surrounding environment.

Weatherman's Draw is a 10-mile loop of trail seated in the deserts of southeast Montana. It does not see frequent use, but it contains lesser-known treasures which may charm the hikers who explore its length. Wild horses roam the trail, their beauty complemented by old pictographs hidden on distant rock faces. Fragrant scatterings of sagebrush are littered around the trail, along with the fruit-bearing juniper.

Leads gained confidence in developing their skills in trail construction, tool use, communication, and task delegation. The trail may be continued by a later crew, but until then, MCC members are proud of the work accomplished there.
