Project Highlight: The Beaten Path Trail

The Beaten Path traversing the Beartooth Plateau at 11,000’ is one of Montana’s most iconic and well-loved trails. Yet, in June of 2022, catastrophic flooding severely damaged portions of the route, leaving sections of the trail dangerous or impassable. Already a priority for the U.S. Forest Service, two tragic hiker accidents in the last two years are a reminder that restoring safe access to this popular area is imperative.

This summer, MCC crews are partnering with the USFS to continue efforts to rebuild this rugged wilderness trail. They’re blasting through rockslides, hauling tons of rock, and reshaping the tread by hand. All gritty, technical work that lays the foundation for a safer trail and improved public access to Rimrock Lake.

“This project was a great learning experience for the entire crew,” said MCC crew leader Scott, “Both in learning how to clear a trail with explosives, but also getting to learn different trailbuilding techniques alongside [USFS employees] Shane and Allie. ”

Despite hard work and a surprise late June snowfall, crew members are finding meaning in the work. “This hitch was tough in a multitude of ways,” said crew member Nicholas, “but it was a really enjoyable experience. Seeing small projects completed is very satisfying and fulfilling. The spot we are lucky to be working at is gorgeous… We are all happy to be here to experience these hardships and the wonders of Montana.”
