When it comes to seasonal jobs, MCC has exceeded my expectations and helped me feel fulfilled in my role in the community. Not only did I lead youth on expeditions throughout Montana, but I got to do it with my co-leader, whom I can now call one of my best friends. As a youth leader, I got to work with 6 youth from the area to help maintain trails, pull invasive weeds, take down barbed wire fences, and more. When starting the season, I was apprehensive about working in a new place and not only taking care of myself but also 6 youth for 3 to 11 days throughout the summer. I was excited to go out and work in the field, but I had some doubts about maintaining the energy needed for the expeditions. That is when my coleader, Liv, came in. On our very first hitch, I knew we were going to make this a memorable summer together. Not only did she bring the silly goose energy, but she had my back when things got hard. Whether it be helping the youth cook dinner after a long day or sustaining the morale of the group on a rainy, cold day, she helped me support the group. The best thing about the hitches was how close the youth got and how different they were from when they first met to the last day of the expedition. Bringing their goofy selves out and their hardworking energy made the hitch that much better. That was also the same with Liv and me. We started out reserved, but as the season came to a close, we realized that we had grown together so much, and our lives would not be the same without each other because of the opportunities that MCC gave us.
