Growing up, I dreamed of working with the National Park Service. But without much knowledge of how to get there or what the job would actually entail, I entered into my role with MCC somewhat in the dark. However, after being given the incredible opportunity to work in Yellowstone National Park, I now have a much clearer understanding of what the job really involves.
As a Youth Expedition Leader, I was able to guide youth through a wide variety of careers within the park service, helping them understand the diverse opportunities available. Our project partner also facilitated career-building activities, which allowed us to dive deeper into niche positions within the park service. This gave the youth a chance to explore careers they might not have considered before. This will help them keep an eye out for future opportunities if this field sparks their interest.
Through interactions with youth, project partners were able to directly discuss various roles, such as Park Service EMT, wildland firefighter, helicopter mechanic, botanist, biologist, and many more. Watching these interactions and seeing how fascinated the youth were made me feel like I was facilitating a positive learning environment for them to be able to grow into their future career positions.
