Seven weeks into LDP (the Leadership Development Program) and we are sitting in the rig heading six and a half hours away to our first backcountry hitch. Everyone is excited to finally get out into the field and we spend the drive thinking of all the things this hitch will bring and all the cool trail work we will complete. In many ways this hitch gave us nothing we expected but everything we needed. We hiked fifty five miles over the course of seven days, had more ticks collectively than I could count, days of sun, days of snow, downed trees, boulders blocking the trail, etc. There were a million things we could’ve complained about but instead, as a crew, we showed up and showed out. We had warm meals at night, lots of late night laughs, shared candy on a hard day, and learned lessons that can only be learned when you are pushed out of your comfort zone. We all walked away from this hitch with a new perspective and I cannot wait to see what the season holds for each of our crews.
