Brushing In The First BLM Designated Wilderness

Crew members stand on a small hill, above a rushing river.

Through several days of clearing long-overgrown brush, my crew was able to reestablish hiking accessibility to Bear Trap Canyon Trail North in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Being the first designated wilderness area for the BLM, my crew felt truly honored to be a part of the restoration of this beautiful canyon trail.

From suiting up to clear poison ivy in the rain to brushing and lopping in the full sun, this job was not without its tribulations. However, the astounding beauty of the landscape was evident each day on the trail. Frequent bald and golden eagle, osprey, kingfisher, and pelican sightings; conversations with appreciative local fishermen and boaters on the Madison River; and the sparkling rapids and evergreen-dotted peaks of Bear Trap Canyon were all sights to behold.

It is exciting to know that this piece of wilderness right outside the Bozeman area is more accessible for recreationists to enjoy because of our hard work.
