Why We Do What We Do

And MCC rig with a rainbow in the background in the sky

This is my second season with MCC and I’ve been asked a few times why I chose to do this. It’s certainly not the easiest job. And after a lot of thinking it over, I decided a poem summed it up the best

“Why We do What We Do”

People sometimes ask why we do what we do
Why we work in the heat, in the rain
When it's buggy and foggy
When we’re tired or ill
And the answer is simply to look around

The smiles shared over a meal after a long day of work
Laughter filling the rig as you drive to and fro
Cheers before you shotgun V8s as a crew

Joy is why we do it
Joy is why we do what we do
The peace that comes from living with a group of like-minded people
Of working and sweating and growing together

The pride in seeing your structure hold back water
The cheers of success
Chucking sod at each other
Singing along to songs someone’s phone plays from inside a bucket
Dragging a sled across the vast prairie with people cheering you on

Yes, it is a simple and hard life
But it is beautiful and it is meaningful and I wouldn’t change it for the world
