Piikuni Lands Crew Member Position Description

Position Summary: Piikuni Lands Crew Members will work as part of a team of 6-8 people, including 2 leaders, comprising the Piikuni Lands Crew (PLC) which will complete a variety of natural resource and community service projects on ancestral lands of the Blackfeet Nation. The position is co-hosted by Blackfeet Manpower Working Friends One-Stop Center.  Duties include establishing and maintaining good working relationships with PLC program staff, project technical advisors, volunteers, and fellow crew members, as well as performing designated duties with a positive attitude.  Crew Members will work under the supervision of the Piikuni Lands Crew Leaders and Piikuni Lands Field Coordinator.  Members will receive some orientation and skills training, followed by 11 weeks of field-based project work, taking place on tribal and public lands. Though some projects will be “day projects”, meaning the members will go home at night, there will be 2-3 weeks where the crew will camp out for the duration of the project. Some weekend work is required.


Job Duties

  • Perform physical labor field work as a crew on various natural resource and community service projects. Projects may range from trail construction and maintenance, weed eradication, mapping of weeds via GPS, fence construction, landscaping, streambank stabilization, native seed collection, planting trees, and more.
  • Daily use of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, pulaskis, and mcleods.
  • Arrive on time for all planned work duties, unless previously discussed with crew leader.
  • When camping out overnight, participate in camp-life duties such as water filtration, meal preparation, and washing dishes.
  • Ensure safety is the top priority during all PLC activities and projects and promote a ‘culture of safety’
  • Accomplish project goals to the standards and satisfaction of the Crew Leaders, and project partners/technical advisors
  • Follow all PLC policies and procedures contributing to the overall functioning of the crew and creating a healthy and supportive crew environment
  • Perform designated crew roles of crew journalist, tool or vehicle swamper
  • Willingly participate in all elements of the PLC program, education, and crew activities to the best of their ability
  • Promote a positive public image for the PLC by consistently wearing the uniform and Personal Protective Equipment, and acting in a professional and respectful manner at all times
  • Effectively work alongside volunteers on projects and provide leadership when possible
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and positive service ethic throughout the program

Administrative Duties:

  • Complete and submit timesheets and other paperwork in a timely manner
  • Provide information for evaluation of Crew Leaders, including both positive feedback and areas of potential improvement

     


Qualifications:

  • 18-30 years old,  residency on the Blackfeet Reservation               
  • Enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or Blackfeet descendent
  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in terrain that can be steep, rocky or uneven, often wearing a 45lb backpack while carrying tools and sometimes backpacking with full packs of 60 – 70lbs
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Ability to pass a Criminal History Check
  • Available entire term
  • Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions
  • Ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 10 days at a time, camping in a tent, 2-3 times during the summer
