What does it mean to do things the hard way? We’ve been learning this over the course of the season, but finally were able to appreciate it this hitch. Our Forest Service trail crew member was kind enough to download an old Esquire article, The Hard Way, detailing the experience of a packer that we now work with and then read it to us during our morning stretch circle. Doing things the hard way seems cumbersome at times, until you think about the nostalgia of pulling out a cross cut or the tenacity you demonstrate climbing 4000ft with full packs. The hard way is just that- hard, but we were able to learn more about ourselves and the work we do by not taking the easy way out.
