MONTANA CONSERVATION CORPS POSITION DESCRIPTION Senior Youth Crew Leader
Summary Statement: The Senior Youth Crew Leader (SYCL) is an AmeriCorps member entitled to the benefit package offered to all AmeriCorps members. The primary role of the SYCL is to aid regional staff in the implementation, facilitation and supervision of the MCC youth programs throughout the spring and summer. The SYCL assists Youth Crew Leaders (YCLs) in the development of leadership skills necessary to partner with various youth organizations throughout the spring and manage crews of adolescents during the summer. This AmeriCorps position should be viewed not as a 9-5 job, but as an experience where long hours and extended time away from home, often in remote locations, are expected.
Job Duties: □ Uphold quality work and safety standards; help foster successful communication and leadership skills in YCLs. □ Help plan and implement YCL trainings. □ Provide technical, administrative, logistical, and leadership support for the regional staff, YCLs and youth crew members. □ Establish and maintain good working relationships with project technical advisors, sponsors, YCLs, youth crew members, members’ families, and MCC staff. □ Learn and follow MCC policies and procedures; ensure youth crew leader and member compliance. □ Assist YCLs in maintaining accurate crew records including payroll, personnel, youth crew member development, safety, and project paperwork. □ Work with regional staff to maintain good communication between the office and the field. □ Aid in meeting recruitment goals for MCC summer youth crews. □ Develop and maintain positive public relations for MCC youth programs. □ Provide regional staff with feedback to assist in YCL evaluations. □ Make recommendations to the regional staff for fair and appropriate discipline of YCLs and youth crew members as needed. □ Complete and submit required reports and other paperwork in a timely manner. □ Assist in any other duties that contribute to the overall implementation of MCC’s leadership development program, youth programs, summer youth education curriculum, service learning components and volunteer days which include national service days.
Desired Qualifications: □ At least two years of college or military experience, or equivalent work experience □ Previous leadership experience, skills or training □ Experience working with adolescents □ Effective communication skills □ Technical skills, including construction, trail work, and an ability to use a wide range of power and hand tools. □ Previous teaching/training experience □ First aid & CPR certification (training will be provided). □ A valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a motor vehicle records check (required)
