Youth Expedition Crew Member
Montana Conservation Corps is looking for outstanding teenagers to join our summer Montana YES Expedition crews. Spend four weeks working, serving, and learning in some of Montana’s wildest places alongside other teens from across the state. As an Expedition member you will join your two crew leaders and five other crew members to help conserve Montana’s landscapes and gain valuable skills through challenging projects and rewarding educational opportunities.
Expedition offers members the chance to develop job skills, practice small group leadership, learn about natural resource and recreation management, while living and working in the outdoors for four straight weeks.
Each Expedition session begins with a two-day orientation covering safety, program basics, leave no trace, etc. Your crew will then take off for four weeks of project work. Typically each crew will spend two or more weeks on the same project, and then travel again to a different site for the final project. You could possibly find yourself repairing fences in Glacier National Park, building off-highway-vehicle trails in the Little Belt Mountains, or helping with natural resource conservation on the Rocky Mountain Front. Projects will be a mix of “backcountry spikes” where crews will be packed a few miles into the project site, camping there for five to twelve days, and “front country spikes” where your crew car camps near the project site. During the weekend you will have time off to get to know your crew and the area that you are working in through recreation, exploration, education, and relaxation.
Benefits: Upon successful completion of the full four weeks of service, Expedition members will receive a Presidential Service Award and $200 as an award for their hard work. Expedition is not a job- it’s a service experience.
Qualifications: • Must be a Montana resident • Entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade • Previous experience in any of the following is desirable: volunteer experience, work experience, or previous YES experience. • Excited by the prospect of spending four weeks camping and working in the outdoors.
Please note that the program start and end dates are dependent on local school and community schedules.
